About the Event
Who doesn’t love discovering a new artist? Or rediscovering one, especially if his works
are little known to the general public but are truly beautiful and pathbreaking? Welcome
to the world of Antonello da Messina (1430-1479), a native of the Sicilian city after
which he took his name. Antonello learned about oil painting from Flemish artists
working in Naples, the cosmopolitan capital of all Southern Italy (then known as the
Kingdom of the Two Sicilies). He then went on to promote the new medium throughout
