“La prima donna del mondo”: Isabella d’Este and Art Patronage in Renaissance Mantua


Isabella d’Este played a key role in ruling the north Italian state of Mantua from 1490 until her

death in 1539. She was also a refined patron of the visual arts. Scholars have long consulted the

thousands of extant letters that comprise Isabella’s prolific correspondence to reconstruct her

collecting of paintings, sculptures, and antiquities. Many of these artworks survive today, as do the

spectacular personal apartments where she originally displayed them. This lecture will provide an
