Jews in Venice

The history of Jews in Venice dates back to at least the fourteenth century, but it was in the sixteenth century that the first Ghetto in history was created there.  This talk will explore the establishment of this Jewish neighborhood, and the rich and complicated society that developed within it.  We will go on to discuss how the Ghetto changed over time, how and why it was finally dissolved, and what came after, which will take us into the 20th century and the aftermath of WWII.
